There are many luxurious wood types but among them, the top 5 are Ebony, Pink Ivory, Agarwood, Sandalwood, and African Blackwood. This blog is going to be about one special type of wood, which is considered the most valuable wood in the world, Agarwood.
This blog covers following points:
How It Forms
Agarwood origins from an infection of the tree. Just like human bodies, Aquilaria, which is also known as the evergreen tree, has a defense system that activates when trees get infected or fungus. Just the way human body creates antibodies to fight a virus, these trees release liquid-like resin. This liquid is aromatic and it gets stored in the heartwood (an internal part of the tree which is rigid and provides strong support to the tree). It is interesting to know that not all the trees have the same potential of being Agar. The trees that are affected by infection and release the liquid have only a 1:7 ratio. This process takes place in the trunk and roots of the tree and because of this whole process, the tree’s wood colour changes to a natural dark brown or black. This phenomenon takes place in very few trees that’s why their value is high.
Places Where It Is Found

These trees are majorly found in the Asian countries, in the foothills of Himalaya and countries sharing border with Himalaya such as India, Bangladesh and China. They are also found at other southeastern countries which are Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Papua New Guinea.
Uses Of Agarwood

Agarwood was used widely by some specific religions like Hinduism, Islam and Buddhism. It was also used in ancient medicines as antioxidants, respiratory issues, bacterial tonic and much more. Additionally, it was used as religious beads in Hinduism and Christianity. Its strong aroma is valued more than the wood itself in the form of scent, oud and incense stick.
History and Types
There are various stories and theories related to it but as per one theory, this was registered in an account of Medici Court in 17th century, Florentine State Archive. It was a description of a wood with aroma and was named as ‘Calamba’ or ‘Lignum Aloes. There are around 21 types of Aquilaria trees for Agarwood. Out of them, there are main four types of species.
- Aquilaria Malaccensis is found in Thailand, India, Malaysia and Indonesia.
- Aquilaria Crassna is found in Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.
- Aquilaria Sinensis is found in China
- Aquilaria Khasiana is found in Bangladesh and India.
Conclusion:
Agarwood or Oud wood has been important in various ways in history and religions. Its rarity of natural formation and special aroma makes it more rare and valuable in this era. As per some reports a real agarwood’s price can go upto 1,00,000 dollars for 1 kg.
